In the late 1980s, hypertext researchers realised that a major failing of hypertext systems at that time was their inability to interoperate, either at a system or data level.
Several hypertext models were proposed which aimed to provide a common vocabulary for discussion and act as a basis for emerging hypertext system metrics. Some of the better-known proposals are:
