Wiki pages may grow as statements (DocumentMode) or as exchanges of dialog (Thread Mode).
Often, a page may begin with a question, leading naturally to a thread mode exchange of views and opinions. Once a consensus emerges, a later edit may reduce the clutter of dialog and replace it with a simple statement of the consensus; document mode thus replaces thread mode. DocumentMode can lead (in the opinion of its detractors) to LayingDownTheLaw. Thread Mode, on the other hand, can lead to excessive personalization of abstract issues, leading to flame wars and the GraffitiEffect. (-- MarkBernstein) |
