Sun's Link Service, designed and implemented by Amy Pearl, is often considered the first truly OpenHypertext system.
The system comprised of a LinkService which applications could register and communicate with using a well-defined protocol. The system provided users with shared or private collections of links. The success of the system however, relied on the modification of third-party applications to be `link service aware'. Sun's Link Service did demonstrate, however, that a common link service and standard communication protocol are essential components of an open hypertext system.
