The Summary Object Interchange Format (SOIF) [1] is a metadata standard used by Harvest - an early WorldWideWeb information discovery and access system [2]. SOIF builds on IafaTemplates and BibTeX, providing support for metadata streams and binary content.

Harvest Gatherers construct metadata summaries of resources on the WorldWideWeb (e.g. title, author, keywords) and record these in SOIF. Brokers index this metadata and provides a query interface to the body of gathered information.

Some common SOIF attributes:

  1. Abstract

  2. Author

  3. Description

  4. File-Size

  5. Keywords

  6. Last-Modification-Time

  7. Title

  8. Type (e.g. archive, audio, binary, dvi, faq, html, image, perl, postscript, readme, tar, tex, text,...)
