SunsLinkService is often considered the first example of an Open Hypertext System. Other systems soon followed:
Interoperability has been an important goal throughout hypertext history. (see HypertextModels). Open hypertext research has produced a number of interoperability standards. Early efforts included the standard protocol presented by SunsLinkService to enable desktop applications to access hypertext functionality. MultiCard connected to applications through an open protocol called M2000. More recent work on interoperability has produced:
